Located at the lower level of the Millbrook Mall at 2 Herald Avenue in Corner Brook, the Humber Community YMCA provides a wide range of community based programs.
YMCA programs are proven to have a positive impact on children, youth and families, dramatically enhancing their health and overall well-being, both today and well into the future.
Since 1984, YMCAs across Canada have spent the third week in November organizing special activities to engage children, youth and adults in exploring peace from a local and global perspective. The YMCA works for peace to strengthen the foundations of community. YMCA Peace Week encourages Canadians to be actively engaged, locally and globally.
Join us at the Humber Community YMCA on November 19, 2013 at 7:00pm where we will be celebrating peace by inviting Grade 6 students in the city to give their perspective on peace in the form of a speech. Each school will be represented by one or more students to deliver their speeches to our staff, volunteers, members and invited guests to the YMCA.
We will also be celebrating peace by presenting the Peace Medallion to an individual or group who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, have demonstrated a commitment to building peace within their community or in communities elsewhere in the world. The YMCA Peace Medallion, introduced in 1987, offers a reminder that it is possible to build a more peaceful world, community by community, and that everyone can be engaged in these efforts. By highlighting peace concerns and celebrating others who share these values and are engaged in similar work, we remind the wider community that these concerns are a core part of the YMCA's work.
By joining YMCA Peace Week activities, participants are inspired to make a difference, deepen their understanding of the impact of individual actions and choices and become more informed global citizens.
More than 1200 individuals and groups across Canada proudly identify themselves as recipients of the YMCA Peace Medallion.
After we hear the speeches and present the Peace Medallion, join us for some refreshments afterward.
So mark your calendars because you don't want to miss this wonderful and inspiring evening.
We look forward to seeing you there.
