Peace Week - November 17 - 24, 2012
What is YMCA Peace Week?
Since 1984, YMCAs across Canada have spent the third week in November organizing special activities to engage children, youth and adults in exploring peace from a local and global perspective. The YMCA works for peace to strengthen the foundations of community. YMCA Peace Week encourages Canadians to be actively engaged, locally and globally.
By joining YMCA Peace Week activities, participants are inspired to make a difference, deepen their understanding of the impact of individual actions and choices and become more informed global citizens.
Associations present the YMCA Peace Medallion to people and groups who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, have demonstrated a commitment to building peace within their community or in communities eslewhere in the world.
The YMCA Peace Medallion, introduced in 1987, offers a reminder that it is possible to build a more peaceful world, community by community, and that everyone can be engaged in these efforts. By hightlighting peace concerns and celebrating others who share these values and are engaged in similar work, we remind the wider community that these concerns are a core part of the YMCA's work.
More than 1200 individuals and groups across Canada proudly identify themselves as recipients of the YMCA Peace Medallion.
