YOUTH OUTREACH

The Humber Community YMCA has a variety of programs aimed at the youth of our community.

Youth Employment Services (YES)

YES assists youth in finding employment through career planning and exploration, training options, job search, funding programs for school and work and much much more.

Helping Youth Prepare for Employment (HYPE)

HYPE is an employment program for youth ages 16-29 who have had a brush with the criminal justice system.    These youth participate in an educational component for life skills and employability skills and are matched with employment mentors.

Community Youth Network (CYN)

CYN is a non-profit, youth-driven organization funded by Human Resources Labour and Employment whose mandate is to assist those ages 10-29 who are living in or at-risk of poverty.   This mandate is achieved through activities and services delivered along its four business lines: employment, learning, community building and support services.

Communities in Schools (CIS):

CIS works with schools to coordinate the delivery of services to young people by recruiting community volunteers to help support school initiatives.  We do exactly what our name implies - we bring "Communities In Schools". CIS is a partnership.  Our name reflects our fundamental belief that the whole community - businesses, health/social service agencies, schools, families and communities - must work together to help young people stay in school and realize their potential.

Our Beliefs:

That every child and youth deserves:

  • A personal, one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
  • A safe place to learn and grow
  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation
  • A chance to give back to peers and community
  • A healthy start in life

CIS place Site Coordinators in the schools to coordinate the delivery of services to young people by recruiting community volunteers to help support school initiatives.

Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program (FPSYIP)

FPSYIP is a program funded by Service Canada with the YMCA of Greater Toronto as the National Lead association.  We have a partnership with the YM-YWCA of Northeast Avalon to deliver FPSYIP which matches non high school completers with mentors in the Federal Public Sector.

Alternative Suspensions

Alternative Suspension is a Canada-wide rollout program that deals with teen clients age 12-17 who, for various reasons, find themselves temporarily excluded from the school setting.    The Alternative Suspension program aims to ensure rapid intervention for students experiencing academic and behavioural difficulties that often result in their being suspended from school.  The Program is guided by a local steering committee representing the Western School District, the YMCA, Community Youth Network and Extra Jucicial Sanctions.
